Aircraft Hall

Originally built as an aeroplane hangar during World War Two, the Aircraft Hall is home to a stunning collection of classic aircraft, all displayed under theatrical lighting.

You will discover a mix of former RNZAF aircraft, including some which have come to the Museum straight from operational service, and others which have been restored over many years by the Museum’s talented technical team. There are also aircraft of non-RNZAF origin, which represent different aspects of New Zealand’s military aviation story.

Highlights of the gallery include Johnny Checkett’s Spitfire engine, VIP Douglas Dakota NZ3551, which transported Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation tour of New Zealand in 1953-54, as well as Avro 626 NZ203, which is the oldest surviving complete RNZAF aircraft. Don’t miss the historic newsreel films, projected in large-scale, which bring RNZAF history to life.

The Aircraft Hall is also a popular venue for private functions, and on occasion, it may be necessary for some of the aircraft to be removed so that function set-up can take place.
