New Zealanders and the Battle of France, 1940
The outbreak of war with Germany on 3 September 1939 saw some 500 New Zealanders serving with the Royal Air Force (RAF). Some, like Group Captain Roderick Carr, had continued their World War One service in the RAF, whilst others had come over independently to seek short service commissions as war clouds loomed over Britain. All were keen to do their bit. On the outbreak of war, the RNZAF also began to supply newly trained aircrew for the RAF and a steady stream of New Zealanders was beginning to arrive in Britain by early 1940. Some joined units in France, ready to go to war.
