Our Green Museum
Qualmark Enviro Gold
The Air Force Museum of New Zealand is the second museum in New Zealand to be awarded the Enviro-Gold standard by Qualmark, New Zealand tourism's official Quality Agency. Here at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand we are committed to sustainability and we aim to maintain our Enviro-Gold rating in annual Qualmark assessments.
If you have any suggestions on how we can be even more environmentally friendly please contact Charlotte, our Sustainability Champion, on (03) 3439 510 or projects@airforcemuseum.co.nz or just talk to one of our friendly staff when you next visit.
Target Sustainability
We have now completed all three audits for waste, water and energy and are working through implementing the recommendations. Some of our current initiatives can be seen below.
WasteOur recent waste audit revealed a whole host of opportunities for us to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. A big thank you to our fantastic staff who went above and beyond the call of duty and volunteered to help with the audit. Here are some of the recommendations from the waste audit we've implemented so far: increasing the number of recycling bins available for staff, replacing waste bins with paper recycling units at each work station, establishing a Sustainability Team made up of staff from each department, reducing the amount of paper towels going to landfill by replacing them with re-usable cloths, diverting organic waste from landfill into compost, re-cycling and re-using printed paper, re-thinking existing paper use and coming up with re-usable alternatives and monitoring our paper consumption, plus many more! |
WaterOur water audit has resulted in a range of new initiatives; a "one sink" policy in our staff rooms, a leak reporting system, water saving features in our new washrooms, timed watering systems in our gardens along with mulching to retain moisture and we are now also monitoring our monthly water usage. |
EnergyOur recent energy audit both reflected on the progress we have made since our last audit, such as the introduction of motion sensor lighting, and revealed more opportunities for improvement. We are currently consulting with an Energy Specialist to find out how we can make our display lighting even more efficient as well as undertaking a review of unnecessary appliances, and monitoring monthly power consumption as well as doing simple things like making sure everything is turned off at the end of our working day. |
We Care
At the Air Force Museum we understand that all activities create environmental and social impacts. We are no exception. Where we have control, and influence, we actively promote ways in which we can minimise adverse effects by reducing waste, being energy efficient, conserving water, recycling materials and providing assistance to our community.
We know that our visitors will respect this position and may even have ideas that can assist us. For more information, ideas we might be able to use or feedback, please talk to our staff.
