About the Object of the Week programme

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand holds a very diverse
collection of artefacts, numbering in the millions. As many
of these objects never get the opportunity to be placed on public display in the Museum galleries, our staff endeavour to ensure they are accessible to the public in other ways.

Our Object of the Week feature is a way to highlight a small sample of the wide range of fascinating objects we hold. On this page every week we feature a different artefact drawn from one of the main areas of our collection: documentary and photographic archives, memorabilia, textiles, art and technical collections.

Victoria Cross awarded to Squadron Leader Leonard Henry Trent (obverse)

The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest British Commonwealth military decoration for valour “in the face of the enemy”.  Since it was first established by Queen Victoria after the Crimean War in 1856, it has been awarded to 1,354 individuals, including 25 New Zealanders.  Among these Kiwi heroes are three RNZAF airmen - James ("Jimmy") Ward, Lloyd Trigg and Leonard Trent.

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand is privileged to hold in its collection the Victoria Cross awarded to Squadron Leader Leonard Henry Trent for his role in leading the disastrous "Amsterdam Raid" by 487 (NZ) Squadron RAF on 3 May 1943.  Trent, who had already earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his actions during the Battle of France in 1940, spent the rest of the War as a PoW and did not learn that he had earned the VC until March 1946, as it had taken this long for the details to be pieced together.  The award was officially gazetted on 1 March 1946, and was presented to Trent at an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 12 April 1946.  The only RNZAF VC winner to survive the War, Leonard Trent died in 1986, having served in the post-War RAF and rising to the rank of Group Captain.

The VC consists of a crimson ribbon and bronze cross.  The obverse (front) features a lion standing on the British royal crown, with the words, "FOR VALOUR" on a semi-circular scroll beneath.  The reverse has a circular panel which generally contained the date of the action for which the award was made, but in Trent's case, this bears the date that his award was formally approved.  The reverse of the bronze suspension bar is engraved with Trent's name, rank and unit.

              Accession no. 1987/144a.

Commemorative scroll for Flying Officer Lindsay Hutton, NZ41173

Large colour printed commemorative scroll presented to the relatives of Flying Officer Lindsay David Hutton by the residents of the Hawarden-Waikari District of North Canterbury as a token of sympathy from the community.  Includes a photograph of Hutton at the bottom, with the signatures of members of the District Committee on either side.  Accession no. 2012/114.2.

Flying Officer Hutton was a 23-year old pilot with No. 18 (Fighter) Squadron RNZAF based at Ondonga in the Solomon Islands, who died on active operations on 16 November 1943.  His P-40N Kittyhawk had been damaged by flak while strafing enemy anti-aircraft positions on South Bougainville and he was forced to abandon it during the return to base.  By the time he managed to get clear of the cockpit, however, he was below 500 feet, and his parachute opened just before he hit the water.  Witnesses reported seeing him struggling in the water, but he quickly sank below the surface and was lost without trace.  He is commemorated on the Bourail Memorial in New Caledonia.

              Muldoon DOG

Personal file compiled by personnel of No. 141 Flight, a detachment from 41 Squadron based at Tengah, Singapore, for their mascot – a dog named “Muldoon”.  Muldoon was adopted as a pup in 1976 by the single servicemen at Tengah, and soon became the unofficial mascot, after “worming his way” into the affections of everyone on the squadron.  Muldoon lived at Tengah with 141 Flight before being transferred with the unit to Sembawang in 1981.  He eventually reached the honorary rank of Warrant Officer, before sadly passing away as a result of an inoperable cancerous tumour in 1988.  This file contains a record of his life with the RNZAF in Singapore, including many official forms and correspondence such as medical fitness checks, personal reports, extensions of service, permissions to travel on domestic transport, “Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Dog)” citation and even a sympathy card received upon his death.  All forms have been filled out as they would for a human serviceman, in “tongue-in-cheek” style, with his paw print provided as signature.  Accession no. 1989/469.29.
