Helicopter

Back by popular demand!

Celebrate helicopters and all things rotary at our Helicopter Fun Day this July school holidays.

Check out real helicopters and the equipment they use, climb into the pilot’s seat of an Iroquois, and watch incredible drones in action. With craft activities, face painting, and the chance to win a helicopter flight for two, you won’t want to miss this free entry, one-day-only event.

Exciting news!  No. 3 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) is planning to bring along two helicopters for display on the day – an A-109 and, for the first time, the awesome NH-90!*

*Subject to operational requirements.

Don't miss a special visit from two awesome RNZAF helicopters*!

Go on a Helicopter Hunt!

This July school holidays, our ever popular Museum Hunts are all about helicopters! You'll find yourself looking for hidden choppers, recruiting a crew of your own and much more! Keep an eye out for more details, coming soon!

Important information

Please note that children must be with a caregiver at all times when visiting the Museum.

What are the transport options?

By car

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand is located in the suburb of Wigram in Christchurch, New Zealand, just a short 15-minute drive from either the CBD or the airport.

Plenty of free parking is available at the front of the Museum.

By bus

The 80, 100 and Yellowline buses travel down Main South or Springs Road. Get off when you see the orange and silver Harvard aircraft on a pole, then walk for 200m down Harvard Avenue. If you get off at the bus stop on Springs Road around the corner, walk down Henry Wigram Drive, past Wigram Base (former RNZAF Officers’ Mess), until you get to Harvard Avenue. The Museum is straight across the road. For more information about planning your journey to the Museum, head to the Metro Bus website or contact us directly.

Parking

We have free parking available onsite, though please note that we will not have overflow parking available on the day due to the helicopter flights operating on our green space.

Are we able to take photographs?

Yes! As many as you like. If you want to take photos for commercial purposes, please contact communications@airforcemuseum.co.nz. Please do always ask permission when taking photos of other people.

Are food and drinks allowed?

No, food and drink are not allowed in the Museum gallery spaces. You are welcome to enjoy food and drinks at the Contact Café.

Is there wheelchair and pram access?

Yes. Should you require a wheelchair, we have a small number available from our Welcome Desk, on a first come, first served basis. Please contact us if you have any questions around accessibility.

My child doesn't cope well with crowds or noise, are you offering a sensory friendly session?

Yes, we will be offering a sensory friendly session before general opening hours, from 9am-9.30am. This is intended to be just for those who would like to experience the helicopters, but need a lower sensory environment to do so comfortably. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like further information.
