Building Our Collection
There are three ways that the Museum goes about building its collection. Periodically, the RNZAF may gift aircraft or equipment that has been taken out of service that the Museum is keen to add to its collection. Another method is acquisition by purchase, however much depends on what material becomes available and the cost. The main way that our collection is developed is by donations of material from members of the public. Items are offered for consideration to determine whether they fit our collection policy, whether we have examples already, their condition and whether conservation work is required, and their provenance.
If it is decided to accept material into our collection (called the registration process) it is important that we complete the relevant documentation fully and accurately. All details relating to the object and the donor are entered into our electronic Vernon collection management software system. Each object in our collection and each donor therefore has its own Vernon record.
