Airmen and friends celebrating at the Victory Ball at RNZAF Station Rongotai, September 1945.

Overview

On 15 August 1945, the most destructive conflict in human history finally ended, with Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). Following on from Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May 1945, it concluded a conflict that had consumed much of the world.

This photographic exhibition, featuring images drawn from our archives, is a record of that momentous time, when the nation celebrated, and our Air Force began the gradual transition from war to peace.

On display in the Level 1 mezzanine.
